Reservation: The Unmaking Of India’s Constitution

Saurav Basu has come up with an illuminating article on how our politicians have subverted the constitution on the issue of reservation and have deviated from what the fathers of Indian constitution had wanted. This is a must read!

  1. Pseudo Seculars…the congress is..

  2. Does the auther of this article know the reality?
The game is about money and not the descrimination.
Upper caste people have all the money thus have access to all the good resourses and better schools/coachings and claim that their kids are talented.
    Is that really true?
I bet, if no coachings or good schools are given to these upper caste people’s kid, they will never be able to compete even the easiest of exams.
I am an IITan and my institure IIT Delhi, general category students used to fail in many subjects and many of them had to extend their stay in IIT till 6 years to complete their degrees.
    Does anybody know that?
and most of the sc/st students clear the IIT degree in 4 years and get the good jobs and are doing very well(you wont know that right?).

    The solution is:
If people are serious to uplift the sc and sts.
They should force govt/or pass the act to provide the money for getting into good schools and coachings. Can anybody do that?
and let competetion decide the merit and l am sure, upper caste kid will beg for reservation.

Dear, competetion is a game of money and not the talent.

  3. Tarachand,
Exactly the point… problem is money. The problem is for the poor. Then why should there be a caste based discrimination? There are number of Bhramans who are poor and their children are good at studies. At the same time there some are people from the so called lower castes who are rich. Why are people divided based on caste?

Excluding the creamy layer doesn’t solve the problem. If the only problem is money, there are some upper caste students who don’t have it. But he can’t be treated equally with a SC/ST of the same economical stature. Just because he was born in an upper caste family. You call this justice?

It is great to hear your anecdote. But do they really mean anything in an objective discussion. Probably you can find a good book on logic in your IIT library and see what it says on anecdotes.

If the government is serious about social and economic justice, these reservations must be entirely on economic basis.

And regarding your solution, it is pure nonsense! No government will give money to uplift someone. If some one can’t afford rice and wheat at the regular shops the govt. can’t give money to him so that he can buy it from there, but would provide rice at a lower cost affordable to him. Likewise, if someone can’t afford education it should provide education at a lower cost/no cost and I am not against reservation as a whole, but I am certainly against caste based reservation, and the time period of the reservation is also something to note.

And you should ask this question regarding, giving equal opportunity to SC/ST students by providing schooling and coaching on par with those who can afford it, to those who are in the fore front of the reservation campaign. Do they demand that? NO. All they demand is reservation. Why? to support their vote bank politics!

You probably didn’t even read beyond a few lines of what Mr. Saurav Basu had written, he never said that SC/ST students shouldn’t have a better coaching, in fact he has written:

    C. Equality of opportunity, not equality of outcomes : equal opportunities can be provided only through quality primary and secondary education which may also include special coaching for any inadequately represented population groups but unfortunately the state in India is actively pursuing an antithetical policy of reserve discrimination by crusading for “equality of outcomes” which is ensured by waving aside merit and reserving a disproportionately large number of seats for SC/ST/OBCs/MBCs to allow a mathematical certainty of selection from such castes only. [Despite that many seats remain vacant especially in pure science and humanity based courses]”

The author is all for better schooling and coaching. And finally, it doesn’t do justice to your IIT acumen that you comment on an article w/o reading it or completely understanding the arguments put forward!

    With Regards,
    RS
